Facts

The Nootka tribe lived in the Pacific Northwest region. They hunted whales, shellfish, salmon, and many more animals. They had supernatural beliefs. They believed if you had twins you would have good luck for the rest of your life. Children were treated with respect and were never spanked or slapped. They did not worship any god. Nootka now means speakers of the Wakashan language. Shamans were people who tried to cure sicknesses. Cuts and bruises were treated by home remedies. Larger wounds were treated by Shamans. The Nootka believed that dead corpses had some power over whales so they would carry the dead body a fair amount away from their home.

Diary of a Nootka Child

   Dear Diary,

Today father caught a ton of salmon. Grandmother and Grandfather are coming to have dinner. They always bring gifts whenever they come.  My parents never except the gifts but my Grandparents always make them except the gifts. Dinner was great today. Dad dried half the salmon for tomorrow. A friend and I were playing outside and we broke one of Grandmothers gifts. Mother wasn't mad she just wasn't happy. Parents actually respect us. I have never been slapped or spanked.  My mother is having twins that means she will have good luck.

Many years ago bats had  no wings they had small, skinny arms that were useless. The bats liked cold weather so they lived in the Arctic. One day bats were told by polar bear they didn't belong there so they swam all the way to the way to the Pacific Northwest Region and loved it there they didn't like warmer weather or different plants and animals they liked change. They were enjoying it there when a flying animal flew right above their heads. The strange animal said
"come up and fly with me bats,"
"we can't we don't have wings,"
"I can get all bats wings all you have to do is climb to the tip of the tallest mountain and dig a hole. There you will see a chest. Open the chest. In the chest there will be a pair of wings for everyone."
   "thank you," said the bats.
The next day all the bats woke up and saw a mountain that was scraping the sky. It took a while but they finally got to the top of the mountain one bat was so tired he past out and balanced on his head that's why bats sleep upside down. They didn't know how to put on there wings so they had a little trouble trying to get them on. They took the it took all night to get them on. They where so tired they slept through the day. That is why bats sleep in the day.
